“‘9 to 5’ Star Reveals Why She Continues to Turn Down Roles on Hit Talent Shows”
While many stars might leap at the opportunity to join “The Voice” or distribute golden tickets on “American Idol,” legendary country singer Dolly Parton has consistently chosen not to participate as a judge on these hit talent shows.
The iconic “9 to 5” performer recently explained her reasons for declining repeated invitations to join judging panels on these programs.
“I’ve been approached many times,” Parton shared with E! News. “But it’s just too difficult for me. I know how deeply invested these contestants are — even if they’re not the best singers, they truly believe in themselves. I couldn’t bear the thought of hurting anyone’s feelings.”
Although Parton, now 79, prefers not to critique budding artists, she has made occasional appearances as a mentor. In 2008, she joined American Idol during its seventh season to coach contestants, some of whom — including eventual winner David Cook — performed her songs.
She also appeared on The Voice as a guest mentor during seasons 9 and 11 in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
Judging might not be her style, but Parton remains active and ambitious. She’s preparing for the Broadway debut of her life story, Dolly: An Original Musical, slated for 2026. Recently, she also commemorated the 40th anniversary of her beloved theme park, Dollywood.
“I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve accomplished,” she told E! News. “Watching it all grow feels like raising a big family — every new addition is like welcoming another child into the home.”
“But it really is a wonderful park, designed with families in mind… and that’s something we take a lot of pride in,” she said. “Honestly, I’m just as proud of that as anything else I’ve done — especially knowing people keep coming back.”
