The actor called the 1977 Oscars a ‘volcanic moment’ that ultimately became ‘very sad.’
Sylvester Stallone recently opened up about his complex relationship with his parents and reflected on the bittersweet memories of his early success.
The 79-year-old actor discussed the triumph of Rocky, which won three Oscars, including Best Picture, during a recent CBS News interview. Recalling the 1977 ceremony, Stallone described the experience as “a volcanic moment, and then it was very sad.” He revealed that his parents chose not to attend the Oscars, despite the film receiving 10 nominations and him being both its writer and lead actor.
“You want the people you love who doubted you to be there, and then you’re at the Oscars, and they don’t come,” he said, becoming emotional. “At that moment, you realize you’ll never make peace with it. You think, what more do you have to do to show, ‘I did it’?”
Stallone also spoke candidly about his childhood. After his parents divorced when he was 11, he went to live with his father, whom he described as “emotionally and physically abusive.” He recalled, “Living with my dad was hard, especially being a rebellious kid. I came to expect beatings — when he whistled, I knew it was coming.”
He reflected on the long-lasting impact of those experiences, saying, “Parents should really wise up. Kids are like soft clay — you mold them, dent them, hurt them, or drop them, and they’re never the same shape again. I still carry that with me. I wish I didn’t, but it’s always there.” Despite his tough exterior, Stallone admitted the pain from his upbringing still lingers.
In addition to his real-life resilience, Stallone has famously portrayed tough characters on screen. He is currently filming the fourth season of his Paramount+ action series Tulsa King. “This show is as close as I’ll ever get to showing who I really am,” he told Fox News Digital in September. “It’s an experiment, and this is pretty much me as a gangster.”
Earlier this December, Stallone was honored with a Kennedy Center award, announced in August by former President Trump. Reflecting on the recognition, he said, “Hearing I would receive this honor was a shock and a revelation. I never expected it, and now I don’t know what to do.”
