On Saturday, the former Disney star received mixed reactions after opening the show with her hit songs “Bed Chem” and “Espresso.” Dressed in a red lingerie outfit, her provocative performance led some U.K. viewers to threaten complaints to the broadcasting regulator, Ofcom, as the segment aired before the 9 p.m. watershed. According to the BBC, this policy is designed to restrict content deemed inappropriate for children from airing too early.
“What did I just watch, Sabrina Carpenter?” one viewer questioned on X. “WTF, that was basically soft porn before the watershed.”
“It’s great to embrace confidence and empowerment, but unfortunately, this performance was neither. It came across as cheap and tacky,” another viewer commented.
“The other performers delivered creative routines with impressive sets and costumes. This, however, felt lazy and uninspired. The ‘dancers’ looked just as ridiculous as she did. It wasn’t kitsch—it was just cringe,” one viewer remarked.
Despite the backlash from some, others praised the singer for her creativity.
A spokesperson for Ofcom informed Fox News Digital that they plan to release an audience complaint report on March 5. If the performance garners more than 50 complaints, it will be officially documented.
Carpenter has consistently remained authentic, especially in expressing herself through her music.
“This is my diary,” she shared in a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair. “Once I put it out there, it’s open to interpretation. I try not to explicitly define what a song is about. People don’t always know what’s happening inside someone’s mind, especially a young girl navigating love and new experiences for the first time.”
