The Country Singer Says ‘Yellowstone’ Star Luke Grimes Encouraged Him to Audition for a Role on ‘Marshals’
Riley Green has built a name for himself as one of country music’s emerging stars, but his move into acting was made possible in part by the support of a well-known friend.
During an appearance on CBS Mornings on Monday, the 37-year-old Alabama singer explained how Yellowstone actor Luke Grimes encouraged him to explore acting and ultimately helped him secure his first role in the CBS drama Marshals.
Green said the opportunity developed naturally after he and Grimes began writing music together while Grimes was spending more time in Nashville. During one of their conversations, Grimes suggested that Green consider acting. Green expressed interest, and Grimes mentioned that he was working on a new show.
A few months later, Green auditioned for a role and learned that he had been selected. He then traveled to Utah to begin filming.
Green made his acting debut as Garrett, a former Navy SEAL dealing with PTSD, appearing alongside Grimes in the Yellowstone spinoff. He previously acknowledged that having a close friendship with the show’s star made entering an unfamiliar industry much less intimidating.
Green told USA Today earlier this year that opportunities like his are unusual, particularly when the lead actor personally participates in an audition. He credited his friendship with Grimes for making the transition into acting more comfortable.
The experience was a major departure from Green’s life as a touring musician. Although he has become comfortable performing for large audiences, he admitted that acting made him considerably more nervous.
At the Marshals premiere, Green explained that performing onstage no longer makes him anxious because of his years of experience. Acting, however, placed him in an entirely different environment, one where he was unfamiliar with the setting and did not have the same confidence he has developed as a performer.
Green’s Hollywood debut represents another unexpected milestone in a career that took a very different path in its early years. Before becoming a country music star, he worked in construction and framed houses. His career changed direction after he signed a record deal in 2018.
Looking back, Green believes his gradual rise to fame helped him adjust to the demands of success. He said that if he had experienced the same level of attention in his early 20s, he might not have been prepared for it. Instead, more than a decade of working toward his goals gave him time to grow into the opportunities that eventually came his way.
