Olivia Munn disclosed that she received a breast cancer diagnosis in 2023, opting for a double mastectomy to counteract the rapid progression of the disease. Sharing a comprehensive message on Instagram on Wednesday, the 43-year-old actress elaborated on her journey, recounting her initial negative result on a genetic test for “90 different cancer genes” followed by the unexpected diagnosis of breast cancer merely two months later.

“In the last ten months, I’ve undergone four surgeries, numerous days confined to bed—I’ve lost track. Surprisingly, tears have only fallen from my eyes twice,” Munn penned. “I suppose I’ve been too consumed to find the time for tears.”

“I’ve chosen to present myself to others when I’m feeling energized, when I can muster the strength to dress up and step out, when I can take my baby boy to the park,” Munn continued. “I’ve kept the diagnosis, the anxiety, the recovery, the pain medication, and the hospital gowns to myself. I needed time to gather my strength and navigate through the toughest moments before sharing.”

The ‘The Newsroom’ actress explained that her doctor opted to assess her “Breast Cancer Risk Assessment” score, a decision she credits with saving her life. This evaluation prompted an MRI, followed by an ultrasound and ultimately a biopsy.

“The biopsy results revealed Luminal B cancer in both breasts,” she detailed, emphasizing its aggressive and swiftly progressing nature.

Munn expressed gratitude for having undergone a double mastectomy, feeling fortunate that the cancer was detected early enough to offer her choices. “I feel incredibly lucky that they caught it in time, giving me options,” she remarked. “I’m immensely grateful to my friends and family for their unwavering love and support throughout this journey.”

She also urged women to request their healthcare provider to determine their Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score.

Munn and comedian John Mulaney have been in a relationship since 2021. They became parents to their son Malcolm in November of the same year.
