On Thursday, Morgan Wallen pleaded guilty to throwing a chair off the roof of a bar in downtown Nashville earlier this year. As part of the plea deal, the 31-year-old country singer will spend seven days in a DUI education center and serve two years of supervised probation.
Wallen accepted two misdemeanor charges of reckless endangerment after initially being charged with three felonies for the incident outside Chiefs Bar on April 7, according to The Tennessean.
In a statement to People after the court proceedings, Wallen’s attorney, Worrick Robinson IV, said, “Mr. Wallen has fully cooperated with authorities over the past eight months, personally communicating and apologizing to everyone involved. He remains dedicated to making a positive impact through his music and foundation.”
Wallen was originally charged with three counts of reckless endangerment involving a deadly weapon and one misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct after he threw a chair off the 6th-floor roof of a Nashville bar.
Robinson later released a statement confirming the event, which read, “At 10:53 p.m. on Sunday evening, Morgan Wallen was arrested in downtown Nashville on charges of reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. He is fully cooperating with authorities.”
The “Whiskey Glasses” singer later spoke about the arrest, emphasizing that he was not “proud” of his actions outside Chiefs Bar.
“I didn’t feel right checking in publicly until I had made amends with some people,” Wallen wrote. “I’ve connected with Nashville law enforcement, my family, and the wonderful people at Chief’s. I’m not proud of my actions, and I take full responsibility.”
He continued, “I have the highest respect for the officers who work tirelessly to keep us safe.” He also mentioned, “As for my tour, there will be no changes.”
After the bar incident, the Nashville City Council rejected plans for the singer to display a 20-foot neon sign outside his six-story bar promoting “Morgan Wallen’s This Bar,” according to The Tennessean.
The council voted 30-3 against the proposed neon signage due to Wallen’s arrest and a video from January 2021 showing him using the N-word following a drunken night. Wallen later apologized, expressing that he was “embarrassed and sorry.”
Council member Delishia Porterfield stated, “I don’t want to see a billboard for someone who throws chairs off balconies and uses racial slurs.”
Metro Councilmember Jordan Huffman also criticized Wallen’s actions and past remarks, saying, “He gives all of us a bad name. His comments are hateful, his actions are harmful, and he doesn’t belong in this town, as far as I’m concerned.”
Huffman added, “I’m tired of this city catering to people just because they make comments. We continue down this path.”
