The “Hannah Montana” star Miley Cyrus revealed that her father was present on set “every single day” during filming, making sure she was never left alone.

Miley Cyrus credits her ability to avoid the darker side of child stardom to one key factor: her parents never relied on her fame for stability or income.
Cyrus explained that having her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, on the set of Hannah Montana provided a protective buffer that many young actors never experience. Billy Ray played her TV dad and was present every day, ensuring she was never alone and shielding her from potential exploitation. Her grandmother, Loretta “Mammie” Finley, also helped manage her fan club from home.
“My parents didn’t need me to be famous to survive or to be stable,” Cyrus said. “What happens to a lot of these kids is their parents want it more than they do, or the kids become responsible for the entire income of the family. That was never my job. Every penny I ever made went into my bank account because my parents were good.”
Cyrus also described how her father’s casting in the show wasn’t a given—he even tried to recruit other actors before being chosen himself—but their natural connection ultimately made him the perfect fit. “It was so obvious… you can’t fake the kind of connection that we have. The inside jokes, the nicknames, the handshakes, singing the songs together. It was a TKO,” she recalled.
After Hannah Montana ended in 2011, Cyrus deliberately took bold steps to reinvent herself, releasing albums like Can’t Be Tamed (2010) and Bangerz (2013), and embracing a very different public persona. Reflecting on that period, she admitted it came with struggles, including substance use, but said she now views those experiences through a sober lens with compassion and understanding for herself.
Her story highlights how a supportive family structure and personal agency allowed her to navigate childhood fame without the pitfalls that often affect other young stars.
