The Poems & Prayers author and actor revealed three non-negotiable priorities that shape his life with wife Camila Alves and their kids.
Matthew McConaughey has long been associated with his three-word mantra: “Just Keep Livin.”
First spoken by his character in the 1993 film Dazed and Confused, the phrase evolved into more than just a catchphrase when McConaughey founded the just keep livin Foundation in 2008 to support high school students.
Now a husband to Camila Alves and father of three, McConaughey told Fox News Digital that the motto continues to guide nearly every area of his life.
Among his top priorities, the Poems & Prayers author explained that “just keep livin” is at the core of his commitment to family.
“That’s something that’s non-negotiable,” McConaughey said. “It started when I met Camila 19 years ago, and we’ve carried it forward through raising our kids. Even when the kids leave home, Camila and I will keep fueling those fires. That’s always going to be on my desk in life.”
Faith is another pillar for the Oscar winner. “I want to keep my faith as strong as possible, because when my faith is strong, I’ve got more courage to take risks and follow through,” he explained.
His third “non-negotiable” is movement. “One of the things that really challenges people as they get older is staying on their feet,” McConaughey said. “It’s not usually the big hits — it’s the small things, like bending over the wrong way to pick something up, or a fall that breaks a hip. Staying on your feet is vital.”
McConaughey has done just that — literally and figuratively — by moving away from Hollywood. In 2014, he left Malibu, California, and returned with his family to his home state of Texas.
Born in Uvalde and raised in Longview, McConaughey studied at the University of Texas at Austin before his career took him in an unexpected direction. Today, he says life in Austin suits him well.
“It’s not an entertainment industry town,” he shared. “I like the pace here, where a mile feels like a mile and an hour feels like an hour. My mom lives just 35 minutes away, my brothers are nearby, and I still see friends from college. It fits, and I still feel creative.”
While he appreciates what Hollywood has given him, McConaughey explained that he craves authenticity. “My best lessons as an actor come from real life. I don’t want to see a performance everywhere I go. I want to sit back, have genuine experiences, learn from them, and carry those lessons into my next role when the time comes.”
Camila Alves has echoed those sentiments in past interviews, sharing that life in Texas better reflects the values she and McConaughey want to instill in their family.
