Matthew McConaughey nearly pursued a very different path in life.

During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday, Dec. 10, the 56-year-old actor revealed that he once seriously considered becoming a monk.

“That entire year in Australia in ’88–’89, I did. And then for another 10 years after that, I did,” McConaughey told Kimmel, adding that the idea of a quiet, hermit-like existence was appealing to him.

He even consulted a monk friend to see if this path was right for him. His friend advised otherwise, explaining, “That is not what you’re here to do.” According to the monk, McConaughey was meant to be “a communicator” and “a storyteller,” and that living in isolation would prevent him from sharing his experiences with the world.

Kimmel jokingly remarked, “You had a monk talk you out of being a monk,” to which McConaughey replied, “A monk helped me understand that maybe that wasn’t my calling, but I’ve still got time.”

Ultimately, McConaughey followed his storytelling instincts and went on to achieve major success in Hollywood. He became an Academy Award-winning actor and starred in hit films such as Interstellar, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Alongside his thriving career, McConaughey built a family with wife Camila Alves; the couple share three children: Levi, Vida, and Livingston.

Recently, McConaughey sparked conversation when he credited a queen-sized bed as a key factor in maintaining his 13-year marriage, as discussed in his book Poems & Prayers. He elaborated during an interview with Fox News Digital, explaining that as their children grew, sleeping arrangements in larger beds often left him feeling distant from Alves. “I woke up one morning and felt like she was ‘like a football field away’ from me,” he said.
