Matt Damon Recalls Clint Eastwood’s Blunt Advice on ‘Invictus’
Matt Damon reflected on a memorable moment with one of Hollywood’s most legendary directors while discussing his long career.
On an episode of the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, Damon recounted working with Clint Eastwood on the 2009 film Invictus, sharing the director’s famously straightforward approach.
While reviewing the many directors he’s collaborated with, Damon noted that Eastwood’s style is difficult to pin down.
“I worked with him twice, the first time on Invictus,” Damon said. “I was playing a South African rugby player, and that’s a really tough accent to pull off.”
Damon spent six months with a dialect coach perfecting the accent, putting in extensive preparation before stepping on set.
“I was ready, excited—this was my chance to work with one of my heroes,” he recalled.
However, after delivering the first take, Damon said Eastwood simply instructed: “Cut, print, move on.” Damon wanted to try another version, even noting he wasn’t in costume yet, but Eastwood replied bluntly: “Why you wanna waste everybody’s time?”
Though the remark might seem harsh, Damon emphasized that it came with an underlying kindness.
“He’s a lovely guy,” Damon said. He explained that during their second collaboration, a pivotal scene involved a 9-year-old non-actor. While Damon and Eastwood worked closely to guide the young performer, Damon recognized the patience and skill Eastwood brought to getting the perfect take.
Despite his terse first impression, Damon’s story highlights the director’s efficient, yet supportive approach to filmmaking—a balance that left a lasting impression on the actor.
