Lionel Richie Cuts Tour Opening Night Performance Short After Feeling Unwell
Lionel Richie had to unexpectedly end his concert early during the first night of his tour after experiencing health concerns on stage.
The 77-year-old music icon was performing at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was about an hour into the show when fans noticed something seemed different about him.
While singing his energetic hit “Dancing on the Ceiling,” Richie stopped the performance and sat down on a platform. He later told the audience that he was feeling dizzy, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.
Despite the situation, Richie kept the mood light by joking with the crowd as he appeared tired.
“When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your a– down,” he told fans.
A video shared by a concertgoer showed Richie moving over to the piano, where he performed “Three Times a Lady” while seated. He then left the stage, and many attendees initially assumed the break would only be temporary.
However, fans reportedly waited almost 40 minutes before receiving an official announcement. Richie’s saxophonist eventually came out to thank the audience for their patience and explained that the singer was not feeling well enough to return and finish the show.
The incident happened shortly after Richie expressed excitement about the tour’s opening night on social media. He shared behind-the-scenes photos from rehearsals and wrote about being ready for the show in St. Paul.
Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris later said Richie appeared completely fine before taking the stage. According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, Richie later shared that he believed he was experiencing dehydration.
Videos from fans began circulating online, capturing the moment the “All Night Long” singer paused the performance.
The concert was expected to run for around 90 minutes but ended after approximately 55 minutes.
