Lionel Richie highlighted the importance of connecting with fans while issuing advice to up-and-coming artists, following the backlash faced by singer Chappell Roan after a reported negative encounter.

Speaking with his son-in-law, Joel Madden, Richie recalled that he has never once complained about fans approaching him in public. “I was invisible once,” he said, acknowledging that he finds it impossible to ignore someone trying to engage with him. “They want to say something, and you can see it on their face. Ignoring them would be the worst.”

Richie added, “Sometimes you meet the person you idolize the most, and you’re sorry you met them,” but stressed that he made a personal commitment never to treat fans that way.

He also reflected on the realities of fame, noting that celebrity life isn’t for everyone. “When people enter this business, there’s one thing they often don’t calculate,” he explained. “I hope you like people. Because if you don’t, your career starts with, ‘Look at me, look at me,’ and then when you finally get famous, you end up saying, ‘Don’t look at me, don’t look at me.’”

Richie emphasized that success is intertwined with fan engagement. “The universe gave you what you asked for. Now, what is it about people you don’t like? You can’t be famous and rich without them. You have to be able to engage.”

The remarks come amid a controversy involving Chappell Roan in São Paulo, Brazil. While she was at a hotel during Lollapalooza Brazil, it was alleged that the “Pink Pony Club” singer directed security to confront Chappell after she was spotted having breakfast, according to professional soccer player Jorginho Frello.

Chappell, 28, addressed the situation on Instagram Stories, denying the incident and calling it “very upsetting.” The matter caught the attention of Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, who announced on X that Chappell would no longer be welcome to perform in the city. “As long as I’m in charge, this young lady @ChappellRoan will never perform at Todo Mundo No Rio,” he wrote.

Chappell responded on social media, explaining her side of the story: she claimed she had not interacted with anyone, saying, “I didn’t even see a woman or a child. No one came up to me. No one bothered me. I was just sitting at breakfast at my hotel.”
