Lainey Wilson Opens Up About Keith Urban’s Straightforward Advice That Shifted Her Perspective
Lainey Wilson opened up about a blunt five-word reality check she once received from Keith Urban.
Wilson, who had performed more than 180 shows in a single year, admitted she was exhausted and tried to voice her fatigue to Urban—but he didn’t let her off easy.
“I had been on the road … I think we played over 180 shows that year,” she recalled on the podcast No Filter. “I told him, ‘I’m tired.’ And he said, ‘No whining on the yacht.’ I thought, ‘Keith, you better get out of my face.’”
Wilson described Urban as a mentor figure in her career. “He recently told me, ‘It’s better to maintain balance than always be trying to achieve it.’ To me, that means figuring out what works for you—keeping work-life balance without letting it slip. Once you lose that, it’s hard to get back on track.”
She also credited Miranda Lambert for guiding her in the music industry. “She’s someone I can call, and she tells it like it is,” Wilson said. Lambert advised her that success in country music is “20% music and 80% business,” wisdom Wilson keeps noted in her phone.
Reflecting on her career, Wilson shared how surreal it feels to now count some of the biggest names in country music as friends. “I’m getting invited to the CMA Awards, sitting at the same table as people I admired as a little girl. It’s wild. And now, they treat me like one of them,” she said.
The feeling became even more real with her awards. Wilson was named New Artist of the Year in 2022 and won Entertainer of the Year in both 2024 and 2025.
“After working on my relationships in this industry for 15 years, it’s amazing to have people like Keith Urban and others I admire support me and celebrate my wins. It makes that little 9-year-old girl feel like, ‘Yeah, maybe that dream wasn’t so crazy,’” she said.
