The agency has come under increased scrutiny after two deadly shootings in Minneapolis earlier this month.

Lady Gaga sparked divided reactions online this week after footage emerged of her stopping a concert in Tokyo, Japan, to speak out against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
During her Mayhem Ball tour stop on Thursday, the 39-year-old performer paused the show to address an issue she said weighs heavily on her. She told the crowd that with her return to the U.S. approaching, she has been deeply troubled by what she described as the suffering of immigrants across the country — particularly children and families she believes are being aggressively targeted by ICE.
Gaga said she has been thinking about the emotional toll these enforcement actions are taking, adding that watching lives unravel in real time has been heartbreaking for her.
Her remarks came amid heightened attention on ICE following two separate fatal shootings involving agency agents in Minneapolis earlier this month, incidents that have intensified public scrutiny.
Continuing her speech, the Oscar winner referenced Minnesota specifically, saying she’s been thinking about people back home who are living in fear and struggling to understand how to respond. She explained that when communities lose their sense of safety and belonging, the damage is felt by everyone. Although she acknowledged she was speaking overseas, Gaga told the audience she wanted to stand in solidarity with those affected.
She then dedicated her song “Come to Mama” to people experiencing hardship — including those who feel isolated, are grieving loved ones, or are enduring what she described as overwhelming circumstances.
Gaga went on to call for a return to safety, peace, and accountability, stating that people should not have to risk their lives simply to be treated with dignity. She expressed hope that political leaders would listen and act quickly with compassion. While admitting it can be difficult to remain hopeful, she credited her community, friends, and family for supporting her, explaining that she wanted to offer a song rooted in optimism to bring some comfort to the moment.
Inside the venue, her comments were met with loud applause. Online, however, the response was sharply split.
Some social media users dismissed her remarks outright, while others posted harsh criticisms, accusing the singer of being out of touch or expressing frustration over politics being introduced into a concert setting. Several commenters said they attend shows for music, not political commentary, and objected strongly to her stance.
At the same time, Gaga received a wave of support from fans on X, many of whom praised her for speaking up. Some shared emotional reactions to her speech, while others applauded her for taking what they viewed as a principled stand and standing on what they believe is the right side of history.
