‘Yellowstone’ Actor Attributes His Long-Lasting Career to Creativity Over Authority Figures
Kevin Costner has no plans to step away from the spotlight anytime soon.
At 70, the Yellowstone star continues to thrive in Hollywood, with his ambitious Horizon western saga currently in the works. Despite decades in the industry, he’s far from finished. In a recent interview, Costner opened up about why retirement isn’t part of his mindset.
“I don’t even consider retiring,” he told People. “I just move on to whatever inspires me next.”

The 70-year-old Yellowstone star remains active in Hollywood with no plans to retire, especially as he continues working on his epic Horizon western saga. In a recent interview with People, Costner shared that his passion continues to drive him forward.
“We all walk different paths,” he said. “I’ve been fortunate in many ways. I’d like to believe I earned it, but not everyone can follow the same formula.”
Since his on-screen debut in 1981’s Malibu Hot Summer, Costner has maintained a steady career, starring in iconic films like The Bodyguard and The Postman, while also taking on directing roles in projects such as the Oscar-winning Dances with Wolves. His recent work on the four-part Horizon saga only adds to a long list of creative achievements.
Though he doesn’t keep a formal “bucket list,” Costner noted that his curiosity and enthusiasm remain strong.
“I’ve always enjoyed life and imagining what’s possible — what I could be involved in, what might make a difference. Not just for me, but for others,” he reflected. “It really comes down to time — and the urgency to chase those things.”
His schedule backs that up. Last year, Costner released the first two installments of Horizon, a film series he’s writing, directing, and starring in. A third film is already in production, with a fourth on the way. In addition, he’s writing and acting in two more films currently in pre-production and producing four upcoming television series.
Off-screen, Costner is a dedicated father to seven children. He shares Annie, 41; Lily, 38; and Joe, 37, with ex-wife Cindy Silva; Liam, 28, with former partner Bridget Rooney; and Cayden, 18; Hayes, 16; and Grace, 14, with ex-wife Christine Baumgartner.
In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, he spoke about his approach to parenting, saying he prefers to lead by example rather than offer direct advice.
“I hope they see how seriously I take my work,” he said. “I went to public school. I struggled — there was too much math and not enough history for me. I was made to feel like I wasn’t smart.”
Costner said he often considered himself more of a dreamer and encourages his children to pursue what they love, rather than letting financial pressures dictate their choices.
“I just hope they find their own yellow brick road, and have the courage to follow it.”
