Co-host Joy Behar disagreed, pointing to Bruce Springsteen as an example of a celebrity who uses his platform for political advocacy.
The hosts of “The View” found themselves divided Tuesday over the question of whether celebrities should use their influence to address political issues or simply provide entertainment and a break from everyday concerns.
The discussion followed country music star Kenny Chesney’s appearance on Club Random, where he explained why he does not believe it is his responsibility as a celebrity to encourage fans to support certain political views or candidates.
Chesney said he has never felt that using his platform to tell people how to think or vote was appropriate, adding that many people already encounter political messages through news outlets and social media. He described his music as a way for fans to escape from those discussions.
After The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg shared Chesney’s comments with the panel, the hosts offered different perspectives.
Joy Behar disagreed with Chesney’s approach and pointed to Bruce Springsteen as an example of an artist who openly uses his platform for political expression. She argued that public figures with the ability to speak out should consider doing so.
Goldberg responded that not every celebrity has the same ability or desire to become involved in political conversations.
Meanwhile, Sara Haines referenced actress Kerry Washington’s belief that speaking on social issues can be a civic responsibility. However, Haines also said she understands artists like Chesney and Reba McEntire, who view their role as bringing people together through entertainment rather than politics.
Haines explained that after constantly being surrounded by news and political discussions, many people appreciate having spaces for music, comedy, and relaxation without political messages.
Goldberg added that while people can research and make their own choices about public figures, not every celebrity wants to discuss politics — and not everyone should feel pressured to do so.
Behar pushed back, saying she believes individuals can still make an impact, even if they do not think their voice will change things.
Sunny Hostin, who said she considers Chesney a close friend, shared that she understands his perspective. She explained that despite their friendship, they have never discussed politics because it is simply not something he chooses to focus on publicly.
Behar acknowledged that people have the freedom to make their own decisions, while Hostin said she believes celebrities who are comfortable using their platforms to support important causes can help amplify voices that may otherwise go unheard.
The debate echoed a similar conversation earlier in the year when “The View” hosts discussed musician Billy Bob Thornton’s comments about avoiding political statements.
