Katy Perry caused a stir online with a fictional yet striking Met Gala outfit supposedly designed by artificial intelligence, managing to deceive not only her fans but also her own mother.

On Monday, the 39-year-old singer posted several images on Instagram depicting her in various outfits allegedly from this year’s “Garden of Time” themed Met Gala in New York City. The origin of these AI-generated photos remains unknown.

Perry’s caption read, “couldn’t make it to the MET, had to work.”

One of the images showed her in a voluminous gown adorned with flowers and butterflies, while another featured her in a metal corset embellished with a key motif, paired with a floral and vine skirt.

In a humorous twist, Perry shared a screenshot of a text conversation with her mom, Mary Hudson, who was also taken in by the images, much like Perry’s followers.

“Didn’t know you went to the Met,” Perry’s mom messaged her daughter. “What a gorgeous gown, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol.”

Perry replied, “Mom, the AI got you too. Beware!”

In the final slide of Perry’s post, she shared a video of herself in a studio, hinting at potentially recording new music for an upcoming album.

The images of the “American Idol” judge surfaced on social media Monday night while fans were browsing platforms like X to discover which stars had attended this year’s event and what they were wearing.

One particular post featuring the AI-generated ballgown photo has amassed 15.4 million views and nearly 70,000 reposts as of Tuesday morning, with NPR noting how it was created using AI.

A post featuring the second outfit has accumulated 4.6 million views and has been designated as “digitally created.”

Katy Perry wasn’t the sole celebrity to have AI-generated images of herself appear before the event. Prior to the gala, photos emerged of singer Dua Lipa in an entirely corseted, off-the-shoulder gown. As of this writing, the post has amassed 2.1 million views.

Later, Dua Lipa attended the NYC gala clad in all black with crimson hair, as reported by NPR.
