Katy Perry is preparing for her upcoming space adventure.
On April 14, the 40-year-old singer will board Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket for an all-female mission. She will be joined by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez, talk-show host Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, and civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen.
The flight, set to last 11 minutes, will soar to 62 miles above Earth’s surface, reaching the boundary of the atmosphere. However, the women will not enter orbit.
According to reports, the crew will begin their training by being “fitted in customized flight suits” and getting familiar with their flight capsule. During this first day, they will enter a test capsule and see their designated seats for the first time.
The final phase of training will involve zero-gravity simulation flights to help the group adjust to the weightlessness they’ll experience during the mission. Blue Origin staff will guide the crew through the capsule’s layout, pointing out key features like camera locations, oxygen masks, and how to communicate with ground control.
“We want them to be incredibly comfortable with every little thing, even to the point where they’re going to know exactly where each of the cameras is inside the vehicle, so they can plan out any photos they want to take and be fully prepared for the journey ahead,” Blue Origin representative Sarah Knights explained to Good Morning America in 2021.
Perry and her fellow crew members recently spoke with Elle, where the “Roar” singer shared how she’s preparing for the flight, including plans to get glammed up by her hair and makeup team before liftoff.
“Space is going to finally be glam. Let me tell you something. If I could take glam up with me, I would do that. We are going to put the ‘a–‘ in astronaut,” Perry joked.
The upcoming NS-31 space flight crew will make history as the first all-women crew to launch into space since Russian astronaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo mission in 1963, according to Blue Origin.
The other women on Perry’s crew told Elle that the singer wouldn’t be the only one going to space in style.
“Who would not get glam before the flight?!” Sanchez exclaimed, adding, “We’re going to have lash extensions flying in the capsule!”
When King joked about whether the lash extensions would “stay on” during the trip, Sanchez reassured her, saying, “Mine are glued on. They’re good.”
Nguyen chimed in, saying, “I think it’s so important for people to see us like that. This dichotomy of engineer and scientist and then beauty and fashion. We contain multitudes. Women are multitudes. I’m going to be wearing lipstick.”
