Blue Origin’s upcoming space mission will feature an all-female crew, including several well-known figures.
CBS News journalist Gayle King, singer Katy Perry, and pilot Lauren Sánchez—who is engaged to Amazon founder and Blue Origin owner Jeff Bezos—will be among the six-member team. Bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, and film producer Kerianne Flynn will also take part in the journey.
King shared her thoughts on the announcement, admitting to her co-hosts that while she feels both fear and excitement, she ultimately decided to participate with encouragement from her children and longtime friend Oprah Winfrey. “I never imagined going to space,” she said, adding that the mix of emotions reminds her of preparing to give birth.
According to Blue Origin’s official statement, Sánchez expressed her gratitude for leading the mission, emphasizing that the experience will offer a new perspective on Earth, empower each crew member to share their journey, and leave an inspirational legacy for future generations.
Blue Origin confirmed that this mission will mark the 11th human flight for the New Shepard program and its 31st overall. So far, the program has sent 52 people beyond the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space. Notably, this will be the first all-female crewed spaceflight since Valentina Tereshkova’s solo mission in 1963.
The company has yet to announce the official launch date.
Public reactions on social media have been mixed, with some users particularly questioning Katy Perry’s inclusion in the crew.

Some social media users also raised concerns about inclusivity and accessibility.
One commenter questioned, “Talk about equality! Why aren’t some people from disenfranchised communities allowed to experience this like the wealthy can?”
Another reacted sarcastically, writing, “Keep that DEI alive.”
