Jon Bon Jovi, best known for his hit “Livin’ on a Prayer,” admitted he nearly gave up his music career before undergoing vocal cord implant surgery that ultimately restored his voice and saved his career.

Jon Bon Jovi revealed he came close to leaving music behind after suffering a severe vocal cord injury that nearly ended his career.

The iconic rocker admitted he was ready to quit before undergoing vocal cord implant surgery that ultimately restored his ability to sing.

Speaking on the podcast How to Fail with Elizabeth Day, Bon Jovi said he first noticed something was wrong after a 15-show tour. Following the final performance, he told his wife he thought it went “pretty good,” but she disagreed — a moment that made him question his future.

“I just said, ‘I don’t think I can do this anymore,’” Bon Jovi recalled. “‘I don’t know why, but I’m okay with walking away from this because there’s no way I’m going to drag down the legacy.’”

A specialist later discovered that one of his vocal cords had atrophied — “it was dying,” Bon Jovi said. The surgeon inserted an implant to help his vocal cords close properly, giving him a chance to sing again.

“He promised me nothing except that I’d be better than I was that night in Nashville,” the “It’s My Life” singer shared. “Had I known it would take three and a half years to recover, I might’ve said, ‘Thank you, good night.’ But the progress was steady enough that I never lost faith.”

Now feeling “close enough to fully recovered,” Bon Jovi is ready to return to the stage with his Forever Tour, a 10-show run marking his first tour since 2022.

“I’m not doing this for applause, money, or fame — I’ve had enough of all that,” he said. “I just want to feel that joy and resonance again, even if it’s only one last time. I don’t think this is a farewell tour, but if it were, you can bet these shows will be filled with joy.”
