The singer says a ruptured ovarian cyst led to intense abdominal pain.
JoJo Siwa shared that she is on the mend following a frightening medical incident.
The 22-year-old singer and dancer updated fans on TikTok after posting a photo of herself on a stretcher before her Friday performance at the Mall of America. Siwa revealed that she was hospitalized because “one of my ovaries had a cyst that burst and was bleeding into my stomach.”
“That’s what was causing the intense pain — whenever the blood moved in my stomach,” she explained. “It was brutal. The good news is it should resolve on its own.” She added that she has a follow-up appointment in a week to ensure there’s no further bleeding.
Siwa also described the events leading up to her hospital visit. She said her stomach had been hurting for several days before her performance, though she initially dismissed it.
“My stomach would hurt really badly and then the pain would just pass,” she said, assuming it was nothing serious. “Every time I was dancing or even just walking, the pain would flare up.” She thought it might be a menstrual cramp or something minor.
Trying to relieve the discomfort with a bath, she said the pain suddenly worsened within minutes, making it hard to breathe. Feeling faint, she lay on the couch and called her mom, who suggested going to the hospital. When Siwa couldn’t move, her mom called 911.
Although her vitals were normal when first responders arrived, the severity of her pain warranted a hospital visit. An ultrasound confirmed the burst ovarian cyst. She spent about two hours at the hospital, received pain medication, and was discharged after the source of the pain was identified.
Remarkably, Siwa was able to perform just an hour later at the Mall of America. She used her TikTok video to thank fans for their support, as well as the doctors and nurses for their swift and compassionate care.
