Jessica Simpson isn’t holding back when it comes to sharing the emotional toll of her recent breakup.

At 45, the singer and entrepreneur opened up about her unexpected separation from husband Eric Johnson after a decade of marriage.

Though the “Irresistible” singer admitted she never anticipated the split, she candidly acknowledged that both she and Johnson made mistakes along the way.

“I’ve chosen to respond with love,” Simpson told Parade. “If I allowed resentment or pain to consume me, I would have lost myself. I have to love others through their mistakes just as I’ve learned to love myself through mine—that’s been the most important lesson of all.”

Now focused on healing and moving forward, Simpson is also making her return to music after 15 years away from the studio. In March, she dropped an EP titled Nashville Canyon, Part 1, and is preparing to release Part 2 this September.

Reflecting on her recent personal challenges, Simpson said, “Recording in Nashville happened during a really difficult and unexpected shift in my life. I’ve never felt so unsure of everything before. But I didn’t let heartbreak or negativity stop me.”

Determined to remain resilient, Simpson emphasized the importance of staying strong—not just for herself, but for her children and even for Johnson.

“I had to reach a point where I could approach the situation with grace and compassion—for the sake of my kids—and stay strong for them, for myself, for my family, and yes, for Eric too,” she said. “That’s what being a leader means to me.”

Simpson and Johnson share three children: daughters Maxwell and Birdie, and son Ace.

As she navigates this major life transition, Simpson is choosing optimism.

“It’s vital to find the silver lining in everything,” she said. “I’m naturally optimistic, and I truly believe that everything happens for a reason—and that truth is what ultimately sets you free.”
