“With You” singer Jessica Simpson reflects on her path of self-discovery as she navigates her separation from Eric Johnson.
Jessica Simpson admits that her life didn’t turn out quite the way she imagined — especially when it comes to love and family.
In a candid new interview with People, the “With You” singer opened up about navigating her separation from husband Eric Johnson, reflecting on how her journey has taken unexpected turns at 45.
“I feel like we get caught up in numbers,” Simpson said when discussing age and expectations. “Like, ‘Oh, at 45, would I think that I would be single again as a mom of three?’ Absolutely not. That was not how I planned it. But it’s just a part of what destiny holds for me.”
Since announcing her split, Simpson has channeled her emotions into creativity — releasing her first musical project in 15 years.
“This chapter of my life was meant for independence and self-discovery,” she explained. “It’s about coming home to myself — being proud of that person, being honest and vulnerable, and turning that into melody. It’s been incredibly empowering.”
Simpson confirmed in January that she and Johnson had separated after a decade of marriage. “Eric and I have been living separately, navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” she said in a statement. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what’s best for them. We’re grateful for the love and support we’ve received, and we ask for privacy as we move through this as a family.”
Simpson and Johnson first met in May 2010 through a mutual friend and got engaged later that year in November. They went on to welcome three children together — daughter Maxwell, son Ace, and youngest daughter Birdie — before marrying in 2014.
By late 2024, rumors of a separation began circulating when Johnson was spotted without his wedding ring and Simpson started teasing her musical comeback. A source told People at the time, “She’s working on new music and splits her time between Los Angeles and Nashville. Eric spends all of his time in LA, where the kids go to school. Jess and Eric very much live separate lives.”
Simpson later hinted at her personal transformation on Instagram, sharing a post about rediscovering her passion for music and “unearthing [her] singular magic.”
