The “Irresistible” singer shares how living in Nashville helped her reconnect with her musical roots after a 15-year break from recording.

Jessica Simpson has found peace, purpose, and her voice again—all far from the pressures of Hollywood.
Following a 15-year break from music, the singer and actress revealed that stepping away from the Los Angeles spotlight allowed her to reconnect with herself.
Simpson shared that she needed an environment where she could fully embrace her true self, and she found that space in Nashville.
“It’s tough to do that in LA because I’m busy being a mom and running my brand,” Simpson, 45, said during a recent appearance on Today. “But when I get away and really look inward, I discover my purpose—and I feel compelled to share it. I have to be vulnerable and honest.”
During her time away from music, Simpson became a mother of three and devoted much of her energy to building her fashion empire. She said it was Nashville’s welcoming and collaborative songwriting community that reignited her creativity and encouraged her return to music.
“I went to Nashville because the songwriters there aren’t competitive,” she explained. “They let you be yourself, and there’s no judgment in what you say.”
Simpson hasn’t been on stage since 2006, a time when she was dealing with her first divorce and facing intense industry pressure.
Reflecting on her early years in pop music, the “Irresistible” singer spoke about how her artistic priorities have shifted.
“I took myself out of the competition,” she said, looking back on her rise to fame. “In the pop world, I was constantly compared to other female artists. People were always measuring record sales. But I didn’t see it that way. I just wanted my music to reflect who I truly am.”
Now, almost two decades later, Simpson is creating music again—on her own terms.
She also revealed that writing new songs has been a way for her to process personal pain.
Earlier this year, Simpson and her husband of 10 years, Eric Johnson, a former NFL player, decided to separate. The couple married in 2014. Simpson said making music again has been a crucial part of her emotional healing.
“I needed clarity—emotional clarity,” she shared. “At first, I thought I’d be making an inspirational album, but it shifted into something more personal, more about getting through this moment. My whole life changed while I was working on this record, in ways I didn’t see coming. But I’ve learned that there are blessings in the pain—there’s beauty to be found in it.”
