Goldie Hawn, Steve Martin, Bette Midler, Jane Fonda, and More Celebrities Share Touching Tributes in Memory of Diane Keaton

Goldie Hawn, Steve Martin, and Jane Fonda were among the many Hollywood icons who paid tribute to Diane Keaton following news of the Oscar-winning actress’s death at age 79.

People magazine first reported Keaton’s passing on Saturday, noting that her family had requested privacy during this difficult time. Soon after the announcement, tributes poured in from Keaton’s friends, collaborators, and admirers across the entertainment industry.

Hawn — who starred alongside Keaton and Bette Midler in the beloved 1996 comedy The First Wives Club — shared an emotional Instagram post in memory of her longtime friend.

“Diane, we aren’t ready to lose you,” Hawn wrote alongside a photo of Keaton. “You’ve left behind a trail of fairy dust — particles of light and memories beyond imagination. How do we even say goodbye? You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can’t tell me to ‘shut up,’ honey. There was, and will be, no one like you. You captured the hearts of millions with your humor, warmth, and brilliance.”

Hawn reminisced about their time on set together: “I was blessed to make The First Wives Club with you — starting every day with coffee in the makeup trailer, laughing and joking until the very last day of filming. We agreed to grow old together, maybe even live together one day with all our girlfriends. We didn’t get to do that, but we did grow older together. Maybe we’ll meet again in the next life. Shine your fairy dust up there, girlfriend. I’ll miss the hell out of you. My heart goes out to your beautiful children, Dex and Duke.”

Bette Midler also honored Keaton, posting a black-and-white portrait of her friend with the caption: “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original, and utterly without guile or competitiveness — what you saw was who she was. Oh, la, la, la!”

Jane Fonda, who co-starred with Keaton, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen, and Don Johnson in Book Club (2018) and its sequel Book Club: The Next Chapter (2023), shared her own heartfelt message.

“It’s hard to believe — or accept — that Diane has passed,” Fonda wrote in an Instagram post featuring a photo of Keaton. “She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, endlessly creative in everything she did — her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her homes, her world view. Unique is what she was. And though she’d never admit it, she was a truly brilliant actress.”

Steenburgen shared with Fox News Digital, “Diane was magic. There will never be anyone like her. I loved her deeply and feel so lucky to have called her my friend. My love to her family — what a wonder she was.”

Bergen echoed those sentiments, calling Keaton’s death “a huge loss both personally and for all of us.” She continued, “Diane was a true artist — incredibly talented, remarkably modest, and wonderfully eccentric. I will miss her terribly.”

Their Book Club co-star Don Johnson added, “Diane Keaton… what a trip! She was one of those rare actresses who made every character entirely her own — once she played them, no one else could. I loved her, and I’ll miss her.”
