The Oscar-winning actress shared that Steven Spielberg cast her in Hook during a casual car ride when she was 18.

Gwyneth Paltrow is openly embracing the “nepo baby” label.
The Oscar-winning actress admitted that her Hollywood connections gave her an early career boost, revealing that one of her first film roles didn’t come through a traditional audition — but during a casual car ride with her godfather, Steven Spielberg.
Speaking at a recent SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations event, Paltrow recounted how she landed her part in the 1991 film Hook, directed by Spielberg, after being asked about the casting process for the movie.
Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t shy away from admitting that her Hollywood connections gave her certain advantages.
“You know, there are some perks to being a nepo baby… I was very close with Steven and Kate,” Paltrow said, referring to her godfather, director Steven Spielberg, and his wife, actress Kate Capshaw, who has long been part of her inner circle.
“Kate was actually my father’s best friend. They were really close, so I grew up around them — they were like family to us,” she explained. According to Paltrow, her early role offer came unexpectedly while she was riding in the back seat of a car with the couple and her father, on their way to see The Silence of the Lambs.
“I remember my father and I were heading to the theater with Kate and Steven,” she recalled. “Steven was driving, and he kept glancing in the rearview mirror at me… I thought, ‘Do I have something on my face?’”
Then came the question that would launch her screen career.
“He asked, ‘Gwenny, will you do me a favor?’” Paltrow said, remembering that she was just 18 at the time. Spielberg then asked, “‘Would you play young Wendy in Hook, in this movie I’m doing about Peter Pan?’”
Paltrow laughed recalling her reaction: “I said, ‘Oh, f–k off.’ Just kidding — I said, ‘Yes, I will do that.’” Though the role was small, the experience left a lasting impression.
“That was my very first role,” she said. “I had one line, an English accent — not a very good one, before I had a dialect coach. I wore a wig and a costume. It was so much fun. Really cool.”
The candid reflections come as Paltrow continues to look back on her early Hollywood years. She also spoke during the same conversation about her roles in Shakespeare in Love, Sliding Doors, and Iron Man.
