Singer Ed Sheeran is remarkably proactive when it comes to planning for the future, although he acknowledges that some may find his approach “morbid.”
The 32-year-old British singer-songwriter has confirmed the speculation regarding his prepared burial spot in his backyard. He clarified in an interview with GQ Hype published on October 5 that it’s not exactly a crypt.
Ed Sheeran explained that he had constructed a chapel on his property, initially intended for reflection on deceased friends and family members, and even for hosting weddings. However, as the chapel was being built, he found it so beautiful that he decided to repurpose it as a pre-planned resting place for himself.
Describing the arrangement, he said, “It’s a hole that’s dug in the ground with a bit of stone over it, so whenever the day comes and I pass away, I get to go in there.” He also mentioned that some people might find this concept unusual or morbid, but he emphasized the practicality of planning for such matters, citing instances where friends had passed away without wills, causing confusion and uncertainty.
Ed Sheeran has faced significant personal losses, which may have influenced his consideration of mortality. His mentor, Michael Gudinski, passed away at the age of 68 in 2021. The following year, his best friend, Jamal Edwards, died at the age of 31, and shortly thereafter, his close friend Shane Warne also passed away.
The “Perfect” singer opened up about his mental health struggles and how they impacted his musical journey. He revealed on Instagram in March, “I had spent ten years working on ‘Subtract,’ striving to create the ideal acoustic album, penning and recording hundreds of songs with a precise vision of what I believed it should be. However, at the beginning of 2022, a series of events occurred that altered my life, my mental well-being, and ultimately my perspective on music and art.”
Ed Sheeran explained how writing songs serves as his therapy, helping him navigate his emotions and make sense of his feelings. He described the process of writing during a challenging period, saying, “I wrote without thinking about what the songs would become; I simply let my thoughts spill out. In just over a week, I replaced ten years of work with my most personal and introspective thoughts.”
He went on to share a deeply personal and distressing experience, revealing, “Within the span of a month, my pregnant wife received the news that she had a tumor, and there was no treatment available until after the birth.”
Ed Sheeran continued to share the challenging circumstances he faced, including the sudden loss of his best friend Jamal, whom he regarded as a brother. He also found himself in a legal battle, defending his integrity and career as a songwriter. These events had a profound impact on his mental and emotional well-being.
He described his emotional state during that period, saying, “I was spiraling through fear, depression, and anxiety. I felt like I was drowning, with my head below the surface, desperately trying to look up but unable to break through for air.”
As a result of these experiences, Sheeran explained that his new album, “Subtract,” offered an honest and authentic reflection of his adult life, delving into the raw and genuine aspects of his journey.
