“Country icon shares her sorrow after the passing of her longtime husband, Carl Dean.”

Dolly Parton Steps Back from Songwriting as She Mourns the Loss of Husband Carl Dean
Country music icon Dolly Parton is taking a break from her creative work as she processes the recent death of her beloved husband, Carl Dean, with whom she shared nearly six decades of marriage.
In a candid conversation on Khloé Kardashian’s podcast Khloé in Wonder Land, Parton opened up about how grief has affected her ability to create music.
“My husband passed away three months ago… There are a number of things I’ve wanted to start, but I just can’t right now,” she admitted. “I’ll get to them eventually. I’ve been coming up with some wonderful ideas, but I’m not ready to finish anything. There’s just too much going on.”
Dean passed away in March at the age of 82. Parton shared that the emotional weight of his absence has made it difficult for her to immerse herself in songwriting.
“I can’t afford to let myself get that emotional at the moment,” she said. “Moments like this can really put a pause on things. But I’m sure I’ll write something else when the time is right.”
For now, she explained, her creative projects are on hold.
Parton has often spoken about the close bond she shared with Dean, describing their long-lasting marriage as deeply rooted in privacy and understanding.
Speaking with Kardashian, she reflected on how keeping their relationship out of the public eye contributed to its strength. “That definitely played a big role,” she said.
She described Dean as someone who appreciated music but preferred a quiet, solitary lifestyle. “He wasn’t part of the music industry at all. He loved music, but he was a loner,” she said. “He didn’t like being around too many people — just me.”
While Dean had his own circle of friends, Parton said he was happiest spending time outdoors, often at the barn or on the farm.
Despite their differences, Parton said their relationship thrived due to a rare and lasting connection. “I think some people are just made for each other,” she said. “We were together for 61 years. We were very different, yet so alike. We had a lot in common, and we just really got along well.”
