A representative for the actor clarified that his short appearance at Cannes was planned in advance due to ongoing Broadway obligations.

Denzel Washington has pushed back against rumors suggesting he skipped events at the Cannes Film Festival due to a red carpet altercation with a photographer.

Speaking with Fox News Digital on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the “Gladiator II” actor refuted the claims: “That’s not true. His brief visit to Cannes was always part of the plan, scheduled between his Broadway performances of Othello. He flew in and out on Monday. It was a great evening.”

Washington, 70, is currently starring in Othello on Broadway, with the production running through next month. The Cannes Film Festival, held in the glamorous French Riviera town, kicked off last week and wraps up this weekend.

Speculation emerged that Washington skipped a Tuesday press conference for his new Spike Lee-directed film, Highest 2 Lowest, following the tense exchange with a photographer. Reports also indicated that festival organizers had adjusted their scheduling to accommodate his Broadway commitments.

Footage shared by Fox News Digital captured a moment where Washington appeared visibly upset after a photographer allegedly grabbed his arm to get his attention. The actor responded by raising his voice and gesturing at the man, saying “stop,” prompting laughter from others in the crowd. The interaction intensified when Washington began to walk away and the photographer seemed to reach for him again, provoking a stronger reaction.

Despite the incident, Washington was honored later that evening with a surprise presentation of the prestigious honorary Palme d’Or. Festival director Thierry Frémaux offered a heartfelt tribute before the premiere of Washington’s latest film.

“This is a special day,” Frémaux told the audience. “Denzel, because you’re here, we wanted to do something meaningful. This is our way of showing our deep admiration for all you’ve contributed to cinema. Only Spike Lee knew this was coming—he actually suggested it,” he said, per Deadline.

Lee then took the stage to present Washington with the award.

“This man is like a brother to me. I’ve got nothing but love for him, and I’m thrilled he’s here, surrounded by people who admire him just as much,” Spike Lee said, according to reports.

Clearly moved, Washington responded, “This caught me completely off guard, and I’m feeling emotional. I truly appreciate this from the bottom of my heart. It’s always a gift to work with my brother—my brother in spirit—Spike.”
