Demi Moore became emotional during her acceptance speech at the 2024 Golden Globes, expressing how “in shock” she was after receiving her first major award for acting.
“I didn’t expect this. I’m truly in shock right now. I’ve been in this industry for over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve won anything as an actor,” the 62-year-old star said to the audience after being announced as the winner of Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her role in the horror film The Substance.
This marked Moore’s fourth Golden Globe nomination and first win, after previous nominations for Ghost (1990) and If These Walls Could Talk (1996). She has also been nominated for an Emmy and a SAG Award.
Although she has received other honors like People’s Choice Awards and Independent Spirit Awards, Sunday night was her first win for a major industry accolade.
“Thirty years ago, a producer told me I was a ‘popcorn actress,'” Moore reflected in her speech. “At the time, I took that to mean this was something I wasn’t allowed to achieve.”
Moore went on, “I bought into that belief, and it slowly ate away at me, to the point where a few years ago, I began to think maybe this was the end of the road,” she said, her emotions evident.
“Maybe I was done, maybe I had accomplished what I was meant to do. But during a low point, a truly magical, bold, and wildly unconventional script called The Substance landed on my desk,” she shared.
“The universe told me, ‘You’re not done,’” she added, expressing gratitude to her co-stars. She closed her speech by emphasizing the message of the film she won for.
“In those moments when we feel like we’re not smart enough, pretty enough, thin enough, successful enough, or simply not enough, a woman once told me, ‘You’ll never be enough, but you can understand your worth if you stop measuring yourself.’” Moore continued, “So today, I celebrate this as a symbol of my completeness, the love that motivates me, the joy of doing what I love, and the reminder that I belong. Thank you so much.”
The Substance was both a critical and commercial hit, earning over $78 million against its $17.5 million production budget. It received five nominations at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.
