Country music artist Lainey Wilson recently shared her experiences of the difficult times she endured before her career took off.
In an interview with the Associated Press, the 32-year-old singer reflected on spending three years living in a bumper-pull camper trailer near her mentor’s studio, facing harsh winters before one of her songs finally reached number one. This milestone came 13 years after she moved to Nashville to pursue her dreams.
Wilson described her journey as both recent and lengthy: “I’ve been in Nashville for 13 years. Sometimes it feels like I just got here, but other times it feels like I’ve been here forever.”
She mentioned the common belief that Nashville is a “10-year town,” noting that her hit single “Things a Man Oughta Know” hit number one precisely a decade and a day after her arrival.
Wilson admitted there were times she could have considered giving up and returning to Louisiana, but she never seriously entertained those thoughts. She attributed her perseverance to a certain naive optimism she’s held since childhood, saying, “There’s something really beautiful about being naive. I’ve always had stars in my eyes.”
In a 2022 interview with “Good Morning America,” Wilson reflected on returning to the parking lot where she lived in a trailer, describing it as both a “sense of hopefulness” and a “little sadness.”
“There were many tough days for me,” Wilson shared. “I felt very isolated and barely knew anyone in town.”
Wilson recounted the harsh conditions she endured, saying, “The winters were frigid. I had to layer on three or four jackets and three pairs of socks just to keep warm. Looking back, if I had known it would be this tough, I’m not sure I would have chosen this path. It sounds crazy, but it’s been really hard, and it’s my only option.”
On Friday, she released her fifth studio album, Whirlwind, reflecting on her journey from her small hometown of Baskin, Louisiana, to becoming a country star. In February, she won her first Grammy.
“The best word to describe the past few years is ‘whirlwind,’” Wilson told the AP. “My life has changed dramatically, but I still feel like the same girl trying to stay grounded.”
Wilson expressed that it’s essential for her to hold on to the aspects of herself that define her and allow her to connect with others through her storytelling.
She shared with Fox News that she views the challenges she faced as integral to her personal “story.”
“I believe the Lord wanted me to experience more of life so I could have richer stories to share and connect with a wider audience,” Wilson said. “When you step back and reflect on everything, it’s important to understand why we pursue this. Ultimately, it’s about creating a meaningful connection and evoking emotions.”
She added, “Because of those moments of rejection, I think people find resonance in my stories.”
