Carrie Underwood Fully Embraces Country Life on Her Tennessee Farm
Carrie Underwood is living her best life in the countryside.
When she’s not on stage or appearing as a judge on American Idol, the country music star retreats to her family’s farm near Nashville. There, she and her husband, Mike Fisher, along with their two sons, Isaiah and Jacob, enjoy a homesteading lifestyle.
Underwood grows fruits and vegetables, raises animals, and has recently started learning food preservation through canning and crafting her own clothing by crocheting — all part of her effort to adopt a simpler, more grounded way of life.
Earlier this month, she shared snapshots of tomatoes and peaches she had grown herself. In June, she posted about tending to her sheep, detailing an experience that left a lasting impression.
While feeding her animals in the orchard and checking on her fruit trees, she decided to pray aloud — something she enjoys doing in the peaceful surroundings. But during her prayer, she was startled by a rat snake in a blueberry bush.
“I love praying out loud in the orchard… it’s so beautiful and peaceful,” she wrote. “I was about 15 seconds in when I spotted a snake. Just a harmless rat snake, but he appeared just as I started praying. It really made me think — about God, and about the presence of evil.”
She reflected on the moment, saying it reminded her that the devil is always lurking, even during moments of closeness with God. “Being a Christian doesn’t mean you’re free from trouble. There’s still evil in the world… BUT God is with us. The snake and I watched each other, but I finished what I came for, said my prayer, and carried on, trusting both the snake and the devil would move along — out of my orchard and out of my way.”
Shortly before sharing her encounter with the snake, Underwood wrote about her recent canning endeavors. “Canning is a great way to make the most of everything and save time later when I need a quick meal,” she said.
She prepared soup, pot pie filling, and some kind of plum-based mixture for desserts. “I tried to use up all the plums we have growing,” she explained. “I’m not sure if I made jam, plum butter, or some sort of sauce, but I’ll figure out a use for it! I feel accomplished! Yay me!”
Underwood rose to fame as the winner of American Idol season four and made headlines when she returned as a judge for the show’s 23rd season earlier this year. She even connected her farm life to her role on the show by naming a lamb “Jamal” after Jamal Roberts, the winner of that season, who was born on the same day as the season finale.
Though balancing homesteading and parenting is a challenge, Underwood remains committed to it. “I love that when we sit down for dinner, we can look at our plates and know everything came from our garden or, in the case of meat, from my husband’s hunting. It’s all from our own hands.”
