Carrie Underwood says her faith has been essential to staying grounded after two decades in the spotlight.
For more than two decades, Carrie Underwood has navigated the highs and lows of Hollywood. Through it all, she says one constant has helped her stay grounded: her faith.
Following a recent faith-centered episode of American Idol, Underwood—who first won the show in 2005 and returned as a judge last year—spoke about dealing with what she describes as the entertainment industry’s often “self-serving” nature while staying true to herself.
She explained that faith has been her anchor, especially in an environment that can feel disconnected from real life. According to Underwood, it’s easy to get swept up in the lifestyle, particularly when people around you are focused on keeping you comfortable and satisfied. Without something to ground you, she said, it’s possible to quickly lose sight of your roots. For her, faith is what keeps everything in perspective.
The Oklahoma-born singer first gained widespread recognition after winning American Idol in 2005. She quickly rose to fame with hits like Jesus, Take the Wheel and Before He Cheats from her debut album Some Hearts, which became the best-selling debut album by a solo female country artist. She has since released multiple albums, including Carnival Ride, Play On, and Blown Away.
Now serving as a judge on American Idol, Underwood says the experience feels full circle. She often sees reflections of her younger self in contestants, whether it’s their nerves or their effort to find their footing on such a big stage. She noted that performing live on television is far from ordinary, and everyone has to figure out how to handle that pressure in their own way. Still, she’s grateful to play a role in helping aspiring artists pursue their dreams.
During the episode, Underwood performed the hymn How Great Thou Art and expressed appreciation for the show giving contestants the chance to share their personal beliefs through music. She described the night as uplifting, filled with heartfelt performances and meaningful expressions of faith.
In a separate appearance on The View alongside fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, Underwood also shared how she keeps her personal life grounded. At home on her Tennessee farm with her husband, Mike Fisher, and their sons, she makes a clear distinction between her career and family life.
She explained that she leaves work behind when she’s at home, embracing a much simpler routine. While she may be performing on stage in front of thousands, at home she’s focused on everyday tasks—cooking, caring for animals, and being present as a mom. That balance, she said, is what she hopes her children will remember most about her.
