Katy Perry left American Idol after serving as a judge for seven seasons.

Carrie Underwood, the American Idol winner, will be replacing Katy Perry on the judging panel for the upcoming season.

The announcement was made official on Thursday morning. Craig Erwich, President of Disney Television Group, remarked, “This upcoming season celebrates 20 years since Carrie won America’s hearts on ‘Idol’ and launched her acclaimed, multi-GRAMMY Award-winning career. As a former contestant and a dynamic musical talent, she offers a unique perspective to one of television’s most beloved shows. This is a full-circle moment for the show and its dedicated viewers. Welcome home, Carrie.”

The singer of “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” Carrie Underwood, won the fourth season of American Idol in 2005. Reflecting on her journey, she shared in a video announcing her new role, “I went from being unknown to tens of millions of people watching the show. I’m proud of all I achieved on the show and everything I’ve accomplished since.”

Auditions for the new season of American Idol will start on August 12.

Carrie Underwood lives in Nashville with her husband, former NHL center Mike Fisher, and their two sons, Isaiah, 9, and Jacob, 5. The show records its live episodes in Los Angeles, but it’s not yet known if Underwood will relocate her family to California for the show.

Carrie Underwood has recently extended her “Reflection” Las Vegas residency at Resorts World, adding several shows through spring 2025. She began this residency in December 2021 and has extended it multiple times due to strong demand.

It remains to be seen how her ongoing work in Las Vegas will impact her filming and judging duties for American Idol.
