He described it as the most challenging and bizarre downward spiral he’s ever seen in his life.
Sam Asghari, Britney Spears’ ex-husband, shared his thoughts on their short-lived marriage, describing it as the “most difficult and weird spiral” he had ever encountered.
In an interview on the “Sibling Rivalry” podcast with Kate and Oliver Hudson, the 30-year-old fitness trainer discussed how he was stunned by the revelations regarding Spears’ conservatorship, which was controlled by her father, Jamie Spears, for 13 years.
“As soon as I started learning about the conservatorship, I was like, ‘Wait a minute. I thought I’m in America. How can someone over 18 need their parents’ permission?’” Asghari explained.
He continued, calling the situation in the U.S. “so ridiculous” and stating that witnessing it was “the most difficult and weird spiral” he had ever seen in his life.
Asghari explained that once he understood the situation, his focus was on offering Spears as much support as he could.
He shared, “I think the best thing to do is to provide support in that moment, and that’s what I did—I gave as much as I could.” He also noted that this experience was something he had to navigate carefully, as saying or doing the wrong thing could have serious consequences.
He reflected, “One of the toughest challenges in the entertainment world is dealing with your parents and the people around you. All the people who come into your life and take advantage of you—those are the ones closest to you, and they can cause the most damage.”
Asghari further emphasized that it’s never the fans or the media who cause harm, stating, “They will never hurt you.” He explained that it’s often the people closest to you—those you allow into your inner circle—who take advantage of your vulnerability. “They think you owe them something, which is so ridiculous,” he added.
Spears and Asghari began their relationship in 2016, and after five years, they got engaged. In November 2021, her nearly 14-year conservatorship was officially ended by a judge.
The couple married in June 2022 in a star-studded ceremony, but by August 2023, Asghari confirmed that they had separated, with him filing for divorce after 14 months of marriage.
When asked if he regretted marrying Spears, Asghari expressed that he had no regrets. He said, “I’m always gonna be grateful and happy that it even happened. We went through so much together as a couple. We learned a lot, and it was a beautiful experience.”
