Brandon Lake’s collaboration with Jelly Roll on his newly released album King of Hearts not only resulted in a powerful track—it also led to some unexpected personal growth.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Lake shared that a conversation with Jelly Roll inspired him to reevaluate how accessible he was to others. “He told me he threw his phone into a river after his Bridgestone Arena show in Nashville,” Lake said. “I was like, ‘Wait, tell me more.’”

Jelly Roll had gone viral back in December after tossing his phone into the water, saying he was overwhelmed by the constant stream of messages and calls. “He literally told me, ‘I’m calling you from a flip phone right now,’” Lake recalled. “That really stuck with me. I didn’t go that far, but I did get a new phone and a new number. I needed to refocus and tighten the circle of people I’m connected with.”

As Lake’s platform has grown, he’s realized the importance of setting limits. “Even though I’d love to be friends with everyone, the more things expand, the more I have to narrow in,” he explained. “It’s about surrounding yourself with the right people.”

King of Hearts, Lake’s latest worship album, debuted this month—a project he’s been excited to share for a long time. “I’ve had this tattoo on my finger that says ‘King of Hearts’ as a daily reminder,” he said. “It’s not about the music I’m creating—it’s about serving people, loving them, and leading them well. That’s what ministry is really about.”

When asked if there are any topics he wouldn’t cover in his music, Lake was clear. “I wouldn’t sing about drugs or things like that,” he said. “I know what I want to focus on: my faith, my family, and songs that reflect what’s transformed my life—and what I believe can impact others too.”

Lake also shared the story behind his collaboration with Jelly Roll on the song “Hard Fought Hallelujah.” Surprisingly, Jelly Roll discovered the track on TikTok before he was even approached about featuring on it. “At first, I wasn’t sure the song would ever get heard,” Lake admitted. “But once we lived with it for a while and played it for friends, we realized how special it was. I never imagined Jelly Roll would say yes. The amazing part is—he already loved the song before I even asked him to be a part of it.”
