Jennifer Lawrence Calls Katniss Return in New Hunger Games Film “Unbelievable”

By Claire Whitman

Jennifer Lawrence is returning to one of the roles most closely tied to her film career.

According to Variety, Lawrence is back as Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming prequel movie The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which is scheduled to open in theaters on November 20, 2026, from Lionsgate.

Lawrence spoke about reprising the role on the latest episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast. She described returning as Katniss as “unbelievable,” according to Variety.

A familiar character in a new chapter

Katniss Everdeen remains the character many audiences associate with the original Hunger Games films. Lawrence’s return gives the new movie a direct connection to that earlier story, even as the film focuses on a different time in Panem.

Variety reports that The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping centers on a young Haymitch, played by Joseph Zada, as he competes in the 50th Hunger Games.

That focus makes the film both a prequel and a bridge for longtime viewers. It goes back to Haymitch’s past while bringing back familiar faces from the earlier movies.

Other returning cast members

Lawrence is not the only original star returning.

According to Variety, Josh Hutcherson is also back as Peeta Mellark. Woody Harrelson will return as Haymitch.

Those returns are notable because the story is built around a younger version of Haymitch. Having Harrelson involved gives the film another link between the character’s past and the version audiences already know.

For fans, that combination may be the key point. The movie is not just adding a new chapter to the franchise. It is doing so while keeping several central performers connected to the story.

Why this return matters

Lawrence’s comments are worth noting because Katniss is one of the defining film characters of the Hunger Games franchise. Her return signals that Sunrise on the Reaping is not being treated as a completely separate story.

At the same time, the plot is centered on young Haymitch and the 50th Hunger Games. That gives the film its own focus while still using characters audiences recognize.

For Lionsgate, the November 20, 2026 release places the film as a major theatrical entry for the franchise. For viewers, Lawrence’s reaction offers a clear sense that stepping back into Katniss was meaningful for her.
