Chris Rock is taking a closer look at the contrasting sides of Los Angeles, saying the city has a darker side that many people would rather ignore.
In a recent interview, the 61-year-old comedian described Los Angeles as a complicated place and reflected on how the pursuit of fame has changed over the years. He said that people once arrived in Hollywood hoping to become exceptional singers, actors or comedians, whereas today, fame itself often appears to be the primary goal.
Rock noted that talent eventually reveals itself, but said Los Angeles is particularly associated with the pursuit of celebrity. While he praised the city for its beautiful surroundings and famously pleasant weather, he also pointed to a less glamorous side that exists alongside its wealth and entertainment industry.
The comedian, who maintains homes in both New York and Los Angeles, said there are aspects of the California city that he genuinely enjoys. He even joked that he spends his winters there.
Rock is currently directing Misty Green, an independent film about a once-successful actress who is now struggling financially while living in Los Angeles.
The movie explores what Rock sees as one of the city’s most striking contradictions. He pointed to the extreme wealth visible in some neighborhoods, where multimillion-dollar homes are advertised just steps away from people experiencing homelessness.
According to Rock, that stark contrast is central to the film, which examines the unusual priorities and inequalities that can exist side by side in Los Angeles.
The comedian also looked back on the highly publicized 2022 Oscars incident in which Will Smith walked onto the stage and slapped him while Rock was presenting an award. Smith subsequently won the Academy Award for Best Actor that night.
Reflecting on the confrontation, Rock said he wished the incident had never happened. The moment followed a joke Rock made about Jada Pinkett Smith, prompting Smith to publicly defend his wife from the stage.
