Celine Dion Gets Emotional During First Full Concert in Six Years

Diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome in 2022, the singer became overwhelmed with emotion as she launched her 26-date Paris residency.

Celine Dion has returned to live performance after a six-year absence, delivering an emotional first full concert as she continues to manage stiff-person syndrome.

The 58-year-old superstar began her 26-show residency at Paris’ Plenitude Arena on Sept. 12. She opened the show with her French hit “On Ne Change Pas,” but quickly became emotional, with videos shared online capturing the singer wiping away tears.

Dion told the audience that her emotions came from happiness and expressed how thrilled she was to be back in front of her fans.

The performance also gave Dion an opportunity to reflect on the promise she had made to return to the stage.

“I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage,” she told the crowd. “So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing life!”

She went on to acknowledge the unwavering support she received from fans throughout her lengthy break from performing. Dion expressed her gratitude by telling the audience that their love had helped shape who she is, before launching into her popular song “Because You Loved Me.”

Her career was significantly disrupted in 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic forced her to put the “Courage World Tour” on hold. Two years later, in January 2022, Dion announced that the North American portion of the tour would be canceled because she was still experiencing serious muscle spasms and needed additional time to recover.

At the time, the singer said she was following the medical treatment recommended by her doctors and remained hopeful that she would eventually be healthy enough to perform again.

Dion later opened up publicly about the underlying cause of her health difficulties. In an emotional message to her fans, she explained that she had struggled with health problems for an extended period and had found it difficult to discuss what she was experiencing.

She subsequently disclosed that doctors had diagnosed her with Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that she said affects roughly one person in a million.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, Stiff Person Syndrome is an uncommon autoimmune movement disorder involving the central nervous system. It can initially cause muscles around the torso to become stiff before progressing to rigidity and stiffness in the legs and other parts of the body.

For Dion, her return to the Paris stage represents a major milestone after years of health challenges and uncertainty about whether she would perform live again.
