Alexis Roderick Joel expressed gratitude to fans for their support following Billy Joel’s diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus.
Alexis, Billy Joel’s wife, stayed hopeful about her husband’s healing shortly after disclosing that the “Piano Man” had been diagnosed with a brain disorder, leading to the cancellation of his upcoming concerts.
According to a post on Joel’s social media, the “Uptown Girl” singer was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition impacting his vision, hearing, and balance.
“Thank you all for the overwhelming love and support,” Alexis shared on Joel’s Instagram. “We deeply appreciate the excellent care and prompt diagnosis we received.”
She added, “Bill is cherished by many, and to us, he is a husband and father who means everything to our family. We remain hopeful for his recovery and look forward to seeing everyone again soon.”
The “We Didn’t Start the Fire” singer tied the knot with his fourth wife, Alexis Roderick, in a surprise ceremony on July 4, 2015. They share two daughters.
Billy Joel, 76, revealed his diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) on Friday, explaining that recent concert performances had worsened his symptoms, causing difficulties with hearing, vision, and balance.
The statement added, “Following his doctor’s advice, Billy is currently undergoing targeted physical therapy and has been instructed to avoid performing during his recovery. He is grateful for the excellent medical care he is receiving and is fully focused on prioritizing his health.”
NPH is a condition characterized by the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull, which puts pressure on the brain. It primarily affects individuals over 65 years old. Treatment typically involves surgery to implant a shunt that drains excess fluid, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
On Saturday, Joel’s ex-wife, Christie Brinkley, expressed her support for him after the announcement. The supermodel, who was married to Joel from 1985 to 1994, shares a daughter, Alexa Ray, with him.
“Dear Billy, the entire Brinkley family is sending you lots of love and best wishes for a quick and full recovery,” she wrote on Instagram alongside a video of herself and daughter Sailor Brinkley Cook dancing at one of Joel’s concerts. “I was searching for some sweet photos of you and Alexa when I found this clip from a recent show. It made me laugh but also reminded me of the joy you bring, and all the incredible sing-alongs you lead. You turn a crowd of strangers into a room full of friends as we all sway together.”
She continued, “I’m sure I speak for everyone there when I say please take good care of yourself. We all want to see you back in the spotlight—you’re OUR piano man. We’re always ready for your music and hope you’re feeling well! We love you—the kids, me, and a couple of arenas!”
This cancellation comes just months after Joel postponed several shows due to a “medical condition.” Earlier this year, he delayed tour dates to recover from surgery and continue physical therapy under his doctors’ care. His tour was set to resume in Pittsburgh on July 5.
