Leonardo DiCaprio Thinks Age Is Flexible — and Claims He’s 32 at Heart
Leonardo DiCaprio may have turned 50, but he insists he doesn’t feel it. In a recent conversation with filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson for Esquire, the Oscar winner joked that, emotionally, he’s “about 32.”
Anderson asked him, “If you didn’t know your real age, how old would you be?” Without hesitation, DiCaprio answered, “32.” The director teased him, noting that last year he had declared himself emotionally 35, before adding, “You’re fifty in years, but thirty-two inside.”
When asked if the milestone birthday had sparked deeper reflection, DiCaprio admitted it did. “It gave me the desire to stop wasting time and be more direct,” he explained. “I can see it in my mother—she doesn’t sugarcoat anything anymore. She just says what she thinks. I’m realizing honesty saves time.”
The actor added that this new commitment to authenticity comes with risks, but he’s willing to face them. “Whether it’s personal or professional, being upfront means you might lose people or face disagreements. But you can’t afford to waste your time anymore. More of your life is behind you than ahead of you—it almost feels like a responsibility to be straightforward.”
DiCaprio and Anderson also touched on his upcoming project, One Battle After Another, which explores generational gaps. “It’s about the disconnect between a father and daughter,” he explained. “We think we understand the younger generation, but really, we don’t. The way they communicate is completely different.”
He reflected on how growing up without smartphones now feels foreign to younger people in his life, including his sister’s friends. “I came from the era of answering machines,” he recalled. “If you made plans, you had to stick to them—or call from a pay phone to check messages. It was all about trust. Nowadays, kids can’t believe we ever managed.”
The lighthearted comments about his “emotional age” arrive after years of public scrutiny over DiCaprio’s dating history, especially his relationships with younger women. Currently, he is seeing 26-year-old model Vittoria Ceretti, who recently opened up to Vogue France about the challenges of dating someone so famous.
“As soon as you’re with someone more well-known, you get labeled as ‘the girlfriend of,’ and that can be really frustrating,” she admitted. Ceretti revealed the two first crossed paths in Milan, though she avoided giving further details about when their romance began.
DiCaprio has been linked to several high-profile women over the years. In April 2023, he was spotted with model Irina Shayk at Coachella. The year before, he split from longtime girlfriend Camila Morrone, who was 25 at the time. That same year, he was rumored to have had a short-lived fling with Gigi Hadid, then 27.
Earlier in his career, DiCaprio famously dated Gisele Bündchen for five years before their breakup in 2005. She later married NFL quarterback Tom Brady, though the two divorced in 2022.
