MacDowell expressed, “I’m more content now than I’ve been in quite a while.”

Andie MacDowell shared her experience of leaving Hollywood and relocating to South Carolina to fill the “huge void” she felt after becoming an empty nester.
During her visit on The Drew Barrymore Show, the 66-year-old actress discussed life after her three grown children moved out of her Los Angeles home. MacDowell, who became a mother during her marriage to ex-husband Paul Qualley (1986–1999), has a son, Justin (39), and two daughters, Rainey (35) and Margaret (30).
“I’m happier now than I have been in a long time,” MacDowell said. “I moved to South Carolina. I’m really focusing on taking good care of myself. It took me a while, because after my kids left, I felt this huge void in my life. They meant so much to me.”
She added, “Margaret kept telling me I should be enjoying myself, but I wasn’t. Now, though, I am. I’m really enjoying myself—it feels great.”
The Groundhog Day actress also offered reassurance to Barrymore, promising to help her navigate the empty nest experience when her daughters, Olive (12) and Frankie (10), eventually leave home.

“I’ll share what not to do,” MacDowell told the host, who confessed her fear about the day when her daughters move out. “Come to me—I’ve got all the tips on how to avoid wasting time, how to move forward, and truly enjoy yourself. I’ll guide you on what to do.”
The actress also discussed her diagnosis of piriformis syndrome, a condition explained by the Cleveland Clinic as “muscle spasms that compress the sciatic nerve, leading to pain and numbness,” as reported by Page Six.
MacDowell shared that she once feared she would need a hip replacement to manage her condition until she discovered a “miracle,” as reported by People magazine.
“I work on my little bottom and my hips with a personal trainer every day,” the actress explained, describing her workout routine as the “miracle” that has relieved her pain.
“I really enjoy working out,” she continued. “That’s my great luck, because I’ve had friends who struggle with it, but I genuinely love it.”
