The director expressed, “I’ve been a fan of Britney for a long time, ever since I was young.”

Hollywood director Jon M. Chu revealed that Britney Spears will play an active role in the production of her biopic, which will be based on her bestselling memoir The Woman in Me. During a red carpet interview at the Golden Globes with Billboard magazine, the director, known for Wicked, mentioned that while he couldn’t discuss the project in detail, he emphasized his admiration for Spears.

“I’ve been a fan of hers since we were both young, and she was one of the 12 acts at the Shrine Auditorium,” Chu shared. “I want to do her justice and tell her story correctly. We’re still in the development phase, and there’s a long way to go.”

He also confirmed, “She’ll be very involved. We haven’t started fully yet, but she will definitely have a big role in this. I have some ideas and an approach, but it’s still early in the process.”

In November, the director confirmed the film was in development, telling the Hollywood Reporter that the script hadn’t been written yet. However, Chu expressed that the movie would focus heavily on themes such as how we treat others, especially young people, celebrities we believe we own, and women and mothers.

Earlier, Variety reported that Universal Pictures had acquired the rights to Britney Spears’ memoir, which details her rise to stardom, the nearly 14-year-long conservatorship, and her past relationship with Justin Timberlake.

Spears, in her memoir released in October 2023, shared that she became pregnant at 19 during her relationship with Timberlake and had an abortion, attributing the decision largely to Timberlake’s reluctance to become a father.

Variety noted that the couple was together from 1999, when she was 17 and he was 18, until 2002.

In her memoir, Spears explained that had it been her decision alone, she would not have chosen to have an abortion. However, she added that Timberlake believed they were “too young” to have a child.

The former The Mickey Mouse Club star wrote, “It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn’t a tragedy. I loved Justin so much. I always thought we would have a family together someday, just not this soon.”

She went on to explain, “But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby, that we were too young.”

Spears reflected, “I’m not sure it was the right decision. If it had been up to me, I would never have gone through with it. And yet Justin was certain he didn’t want to be a father. To this day, it remains one of the most painful experiences of my life.”
